Who’s Your MVP?
It may be premature to be having this conversation, but everyone else is doing it, so why not? Let’s jump off the bridge, too. Who is going to be the NFL’s Most Valuable Player this year?
Will it be Brett Favre? How about Drew Brees? Peyton Manning has to be in the conversation, right? Could Chris Johnson be a dark horse candidate? I could listen to an argument for any of those guys. They are all having great seasons, putting up great statistics, and their teams are winning. Any of these players would be the easy pick, the safe pick, the boring pick.
How about taking a look at the other side of the ball. Could a defensive player be the MVP? Alan Page did it in 1971. Lawrence Taylor did it in 1986. Maybe it’s time for a defensive player to pick one off? (How’s that for foreshadowing?) I didn’t start the conversation (Packergeeks and Cheesehead TV did), but I’ll happily throw some more fuel on the fire. I’m officially endorsing Charles Woodson for MVP.
And why not? Charles Woodson is playing the best football of his career, and the argument can be made that he is more valuable to the Packers than Favre, Brees, Manning, and Johnson are to their respective teams. Woodson has 54 tackles, 2 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, 2 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions so far this season. Those are great amazing numbers. Moreover, his presence on the field is making his teammates perform at a higher level. That sounds like an MVP to me.

I think the Packers record will work against Woodson. After Drew Brees’s performance last night, he has to receive consideration. Alas , as a Packers fan, it pains me to say that so far, Brent whats-his- name, should be right at the top with Peyton.
The Packers record could work against him unless they run the table and Woodson continues to play like he did against the Lions. Stranger things have happened in the NFL.
