Initial Reactions to Packers vs. Steelers

December 20, 2009

The Bad:

Mason Crosby. He needs to get his confidence back, or he will cost the Packers a playoff game.

Jarrett Bush.  Brandon Chillar had a bonehead penalty at the end of the game that negated a Bush interception.  Bush was almost the hero.  Almost.

Drops by the receivers.  Once again, multiple receivers had their fair share of drops.

The offensive line looked flat and was outplayed for much of this game.  Rodgers is tough, but no one can take that many hits and keep getting up.  Today Rodgers was better, but you can tell that the lack of protection is affecting him. Case in point: Overthrowing a wide-open Donald Driver in the first quarter.

The Good:

Special Teams looked much improved.  Derrick Martin was flying all over the place, Jeremy Kapinos looked pretty good, and Jordy Nelson is beginning to look more comfortable as a returner.

Aaron Rodgers settled in nicely after getting thoroughly abused in the first quarter.

The rookies continue to impress: Clay Matthews III is making everyone drafted ahead of him look like a slouch, and Brad Jones is playing really well – On one play Jones fell down, but he never quit.  His reward was his second sack of the season.

Jermichael Finley is a beast with soft hands.  The guy catches anything thrown at him.

Overall:

These two teams are eerily similar. They both have quarterbacks who like to hold the ball, they commit numerous penalties that kill drives, and neither defense can get off the field on third down.  The difference today?  Field goal kickers.  The difference this season?  Wins and losses. Edge = Packers.

With so many opportunities to put the game away, you kind of expected the defense to make a play.  It didn’t happen.  Tough loss for the Packers.

If there is a silver lining, this loss should refocus the defense for the playoff push.

I think the difference in the game was no fumble recoveries or pass interceptions for the Packers. We had our chances but couldn’t get the turnovers that we’ve become used to. Too bad about those Vikings ( insert sarcasm icon).
