Packers and Vikings Playoff Possibilities

Yahoo Sports has put together a pretty good website for this year’s playoffs.  It’s called the NFL Playoff Scenario Generator and you can click here to find it.  It allows you to look at every possible playoff matchup based on the outcomes of next week’s games.  You can take the time and try to figure out who your team could play in the postseason, or if your team is the Packers or Vikings, I’ve done the leg work for you.

Green Bay:

The Green and Gold’s most likely opponent is Arizona.  However, if the Cardinals AND the Giants win, the Packers would play someone else.  That someone else would be Dallas or Minnesota.  There is no scenario in which the Packers would play the Eagles in the first round.  Cross Philadelphia off the list.

The Packers would play at Dallas, if the Cowboys, Giants, and Cardinals all win.

The Packers would play at Minnesota, in Favrebowl III, if If the Eagles, Giants, and Cardinals all win.

No matter how you look at it, the Packers would play an away game and will be the 5th or 6th seed.

Minnesota:

The Vikings’ opponent depends on the Eagles.  If the Eagles win, the Eagles are the 2nd seed.  If the Eagles lose, and the Vikings win, then the Vikings are the 2nd seed.  If the Eagles and Vikings lose, and the Cardinals win, the Cardinals are the 2nd seed.  Whoever the 2nd seed ends up being, they will get a bye week and will be watching the playoffs from home…but, you know, in a good way.

The Vikings will either have a bye, play the Packers, or play the Eagles.  There is no scenario in which the Vikings play the Cardinals.  Cross the Cardinals off the list.

The Vikings will earn a bye if they win, and the Eagles lose.

The Vikings will host the Packers if the Eagles, Giants, and Cardinals all win.

The Vikings will host the Cowboys if the Eagles and Vikings both win.  In this scenario, the outcome of the Packers vs. Cardinals becomes irrelevant. (I suppose it is already irrelevant if you’re a Vikings fan.)

The Vikings will host the Eagles if the Cowboys, Giants, and Cardinals all win.

Of course, I could be wrong, this stuff is confusing.  Remind me never to do this again.

Also of Note:

One of the more interesting possibilities is if the Vikings secure the 2nd seed (Vikings win AND Eagles lose). In this case, there would be two rematches of Week 17 games.  The Eagles and Cowboys would play again, and the Packers and Cardinals would play again.  If you count the preseason (in the case of the Packers and Cardinals), then all of these teams would be playing each other for the third time this season.  Moreover, it would be the third time the Packers were playing at Arizona this year.

Ties make everything even more confusing, and I’m not even going there.

Overall, this gives me a headache, and none of my speculation matters when this weekend comes around and they actually play the games. I’m done speculating.  Have I thoroughly confused you yet?  Enjoy the playoff generator.
