Mr. Green

That's "Mr. Green" to you.

Ahman Green is my new favorite Green Bay Packer. He may not even make this year’s 53 man roster, but he will be contributing to the state of Wisconsin in a more important way.

Green has already planned out his post-football career. When he is finished diving through holes and bowling over defenders, he wants to become a teacher. In fact, he has already begun. Instead of reading blitzes behind the line of scrimmage, his new endeavor involves reading the intrinsic motivation for at-risk and special-needs students. As Tom Fanning of Packers.com writes:

Since mid-February, Green has been serving a teaching internship at De Pere High School, primarily working with at-risk and special-needs students. Green said the original plan was for him to intern at the school for about a month, but since he is an unrestricted free agent and working out on his own, he now expects to be at De Pere for the remainder of the school year.

Imagine walking into your high school class to find Ahman Green standing at the front of the room. If that doesn’t spark your interest, I don’t know what will. By the looks and sounds of it, Mr. Green is in the classroom for all the right reasons, too. Again from Tom Fanning:

“I have always been driven to help kids in any way, through my foundation, through when I was playing and stuff like that,” Green said. “Being a teacher is an easy way to help kids, teaching them, talking to them, counseling them, doing whatever, because high-school age is a critical age in life.”

Kudos to you, Mr. Green. Let’s hope that you begin a new tradition in Titletown and all over the United States. A tradition of professional athletes becoming leaders in the classroom.

Do you know which high school, east or west? I attended east De Pere for a couple years before I moved to Colorado.

I’m from the Madison area, so I don’t know De Pere that well. According to the Unified School District of De Pere’s website, there is currently one high school. They must have combined at some point.

However, if they keep getting ex-Packers to be teachers, enrollment might go up and they’ll need two high schools again!
