Mark(o) It, Dude.

June 29, 2010

The Minnesota Vikings win! Skol Vikings! Well, sort of. The Purple and Gold were awarded wide receiver Marko Mitchell off of the waiver wire yesterday. Since the waiver wire pecking order is similar to the draft order, some might call it a “win” for the Vikings.

According to the Vikings themselves, Marko Mitchell stands taller than the rest:

Mitchell has good size at 6-4, 218 pounds and is entering his 2nd NFL season out of the University of Nevada-Reno.

Brad Biggs of the National Football Post added to the Marko lore:

Mitchell, who was a seventh-round draft pick out of Nevada by Washington in 2009, was productive enough for the Redskins last summer that some believed he was a developmental talent in the works. But with a slew of veteran wideouts, the Redskins released him shortly after the draft. The Lions scooped him up and now he’ll try another team…The intriguing thing about Mitchell is he stands 6-4 and is 218 pounds and he can run.

The addition of Mitchell to an already strong receiving corps brings the grand total of Vikings receivers to 9. Holy crap, Batman! That’s a lot of wideouts. I guess they’re lining up to play catch with ol’ grandpa Favre. It’s too bad half of the receivers on the roster won’t be around long enough to actually catch a pass from the future hall of famer.

Since you asked, the nine Vikings receivers are Bernard Berrian, Taye Biddle, Marquis Hamilton, William Percival Harvin III (Now that’s a name!), Jaymar Johnson, Greg Lewis, Marko Mitchell, Logan Payne, and Sidney Rice. This list doesn’t even include recently wide receiver-turned-running back Darius Reynaud. That’s a lot of bodies vying for 5, maybe 6 spots (if someone can make a name for themselves on special teams). All of these receivers in the Vikings stable certainly begs the following question:

How many Vikings does it take to play wide receiver?

…Wait for it…

…Wait for it…

None, just hand the ball to Adrian Peterson! (Ba-dump-bump, ching!)

Thank you, thank you. I’ll be here all day!
