Vikings Not Interested In Pitts?
Brian McIntyre of Mac’s Football Blog reports that the Vikings “will not be in the Chester Pitts sweepstakes.” As noted in a previous post, Chester Pitts is working out for multiple teams in Arizona today. The Vikings were reportedly one of the teams interested in the veteran lineman.
Joe Schmit, the sports director at KSTP-TV in Minneapolis, and Rick Spielman, the Vikings’ vice president of player personnel, were golfing together when Spielman mentioned the lack of interest in Pitts. Spielman also said there was no interest in bringing in free agent wide receiver Terrell Owens.
It’s possible Spielman’s comments are a smoke screen and the Vikes are trying to not show their hand to Pitts’ agent. It is also possible the Vikings are ready to start training camp with the players already on their roster.
The more I think about Spielman’s comments, the more I realize that the Vikings would be putting themselves in a difficult spot by signing Pitts. How would the rest of the locker room react to a free agent, backup lineman getting paid a lot of money while the Vikings front office sits and waits on extending the contracts of their own players? At this point, it may be a wise move to avoid a spending “sweepstakes.”
