Notes On The Packers Depth Chart

August 10, 2010

The Green Bay Packers released their first official depth chart of the 2010 season. The full breakdown is at, and at first glance, the depth chart does not include many surprises. The backup positions, however, are somewhat intriguing.

Offensive Line: The offensive line begins the same way it ended last year with starters Chad Clifton, Daryn Colledge, Scott Wells, Josh Sitton, and Mark Tauscher. In what is turning out to be a fierce training camp battle at left guard, rookie Bryan Bulaga is listed as the primary backup at left tackle and left guard.

Wide Receiver: The depth chart doesn’t provide any new information on the fight for the third receiver position between Jordy Nelson and James Jones. Nelson is listed as the backup to Greg Jennings, and Jones is listed behind Donald Driver.

Running Back: As expected, Ryan Grant is on top and followed by Brandon Jackson. The third RB listed is Kregg Lumpkin. Listed under the “other” category are Quinn Porter and James Starks (PUP).

Outside Linebacker: Perhaps the biggest surprise of the entire depth chart is Brandon Chillar who is now listed as the starting right outside linebacker followed by second year player Brad Jones.

Inside Linebacker: With Chillar moving outside, Desmond Bishop is listed as the backup to both Nick Barnett and A.J. Hawk.

Cornerback: Starters Charles Woodson and Tramon Williams remain entact, but fan-favorite Sam Shields has a long way to go to make the final roster. He is currently listed fourth at the left cornerback position. Pat Lee and Brandon Underwood are the primary backups.

Kick Returner/Punt Returner: Will Blackmon is listed as the starter for both kick and punt returner, but special teams coach Shawn Slocum admitted that using Brandon Jackson as a kick returner could become “a real scenario.”

Punter: The punter position is not listed on the depth chart, however, Tim Masthay is listed as the second kicker. I don’t know if this gives Masthay a leg up over Chris Bryan in the punting competition, but his versatility certainly cannot hurt him.

The initial depth chart doesn’t provide much insight into who will make the Packers final roster, but the picture will become clearer when the Packers roster is trimmed down to 75 players on September 1st, and again to 53 players on September 5th.
