Preseason Week 1: Browns vs. Packers
The Green Bay Packers open up their preseason schedule this Saturday at Lambeau Field against the Cleveland Browns. The game will be televised locally and begins at 7:00 p.m. (Lambeau time).
Greg Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has the inside scoop on what we can expect to see from the Packers this weekend. According to Bedard, the Packers starters will “play about 20 snaps.” McCarthy also added he wants to make the punting competition as fair as possible.
“I just want one holder per game. Now, whether we go every other punt or every two punts, we’ll determine that in the next day or so. I want to make it as 50-50 as I possibly can.”
Not expected to play are Donald Driver, Will Blackmon, Alex Joseph, Clay Matthews, Nick Barnett, and Jason Spitz.
Personally, I’m excited to see some of the rookies and unproven players get some playing time. Specifically, I will be watching the offensive and defensive backfields. Rookie running back Quinn Porter has been an intriguing player in training camp with a real shot at making the final roster. Another player to keep an eye on is undrafted rookie free agent Sam Shields. He should get an extended look at cornerback and maybe even field a punt or two. The knock on Shields has been his inability to cleanly field punts, so the preseason seems like the ideal situation for the youngster to prove himself.
