Sidney Rice Undergoes Hip Surgery

August 24, 2010

Vikings wide receiver Sidney Rice underwent hip surgery yesterday and will miss at least the first half of the 2010 season. Chip Scoggins of the Minneapolis Star Tribune confirmed the surgery via text message from Rice who wrote that the surgery “went well.”

Sidney Rice first visited the Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado after organized team activities in June, but doctors told him he didn’t require surgery.

“He said it was something I could try and work through,” Rice said. “That was the plan I tried. I was trying to rehab it. The area just got worse.”

Rice’s fears were confirmed when he returned to the clinic last week, and doctors told him that his hip “showed significant changes.”

Despite undergoing surgery on Monday, the fourth-year reciever out of the University of South Carolina has already began his rehab work. Rice told Scoggins that  he rode a bike for 20 minutes last night after his surgery.

Coming into the year, many considered the Vikings wide receiver corps to be a strength of the team. But with Rice sidelined, and Percy Harvin’s status still unclear due to recurring migraines, the Vikings are now looking outside the roster for some depth at the position. To address this need, the team officially announced the signing of Javon Walker.

I’ll have more on Walker and his “experimental knee surgery” this offseason in the next post.
