Vikings Notes: Trades, Injuries, & Position Battles

August 25, 2010

The Vikings official blog has confirmed the team’s acquisition of wide receiver Greg Camarillo in exchange for cornerback Benny Sapp. For a closer look at Camarillo, check out my post from earlier today.

The Vikings fan base routinely voiced mixed emotions regarding Sapp’s abilities, but defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier had nothing but praise for the seventh-year cornerback.

“Did a great job while he was here, really helped us out down the stretch a year ago, and wish him the best.”

On a personal note, the one time I met Benny Sapp, I was impressed. He was an outgoing, friendly, and approachable guy who went out of his way to talk to fans. Best of luck to you, Benny.

The player the Vikings received for Sapp, Greg Camarillo, was not on the practice field today. Pending a physical examination, he should join the club tomorrow.

A welcomed addition to the practice field today was wide receiver Percy Harvin. He did limited work, but teammate Bernard Berrian thinks Harvin will do everything tomorrow.

A player the Vikings do not expect to see on the practice field for at least 8 weeks is wide receiver Sidney Rice. Using his official website, Rice wrote about the events leading up to his surgery. The fourth-year reciever out of South Carolina said he put off surgery because doctors told him “it could heal on its own.”

Rice also wrote that he revisited a hip specialist after mini-camp because he “tweaked” his hip during practice. After talking to specialists, teammates, and trainers, Rice opted for surgery. Upon hearing that playing on his bothersome hip could have threatened his career, Rice was happy with the decision to opt for surgery.

“He [the doctor] said it could have been my last year of playing football, so I know I made the right decision,” Rice wrote on his blog.

There were other notable players missing from Vikings practice today. Defensive linemen Jared Allen and Jimmy Kennedy both missed today’s practice session. Tom Pelissero of 1500ESPN – Twin Cities reports that Jared Allen has an “undisclosed injury” that kept him off the field.

In a post-practice press conference, Leslie Frazier failed to provide any specifics on Allen’s injury.

“I know our trainers are working with (Allen) on something that he wasn’t able to be at practice for.”

Although he didn’t reveal the specific injury, Frazier was a bit more forthright regarding Jimmy Kennedy. He told reporters that Kennedy’s injury may cause him to miss the team’s third preseason game.

“I don’t know if we’ll have him for this (Saturday) ballgame or not,” Frazier said.

The defensive coordinator was more definitive when talking about positional battles. He said the competition between Tyrell Johnson and Jamarca Sanford should sort itself out after Saturday’s preseason game.

“They’re still nip and tuck; Ty (Tyrell Johnson) will get some reps this week, Husain (Abdullah) will get some reps there and Jamarca will as well. Hopefully after this ballgame we’ll come to a conclusion.”
