Vikings Chris Cook Expected To Start Saturday
Chris Cook has put together an impressive training camp and preseason. The coaching staff is high on the 6-2 cornerback out of Virginia, and according to Chip Scoggins of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the rookie will get a chance to showcase his talent with the starters during Saturday’s exhibition game against the Seattle Seahawks.
In practice, Cook has been lining up on the left side of the field behind 2-time Pro Bowl cornerback Antione Winfield. However, on Saturday night, Cook will line up on the right side opposite Winfield. The former Virginia Cavalier will get the starting nod ahead of veteran Lito Sheppard and second-year player Asher Allen. Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier told Scoggins he wants to see all the cornerbacks play before making a decision on the regular season starter.
“Well we want to get through this next ball game and get a chance to evaluate this third preseason ball game,” he said. “Chris will get some reps, Asher will get some reps, and so will Lito. And then we will try to put together what we have seen over training camp and preseason games and try to make a decision.”
Head coach Brad Childress noted that even though Chris Cook has been lining up on the left side, he is no stranger to playing either cornerback position.
“He’s done some decent things over there [on the right side],” Childress said. “That’s where he played his senior year. He played left before that. We’re worried a little bit about the footwork. I think he’s done some okay things over there. I think he’s probably more comfortable just because he spent all those turns at training camp on the left, but we’ll get a chance to see him play over there a little bit.”
Chris Cook and the rest of the Vikings squad will square off against the Seattle Seahawks at 7:00 p.m. CDT on Saturday night at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. The preseason game will be held on the new Sportexe turf installed at Mall of America Field. Childress said the starters will play the “1st half and then 1 series into the 3rd quarter.”
