Sidney Rice Inching Toward Return

October 28, 2010

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Sidney Rice is getting closer to returning to the field following hip surgery that has sidelined him since the preseason. The Vikings placed Rice on the PUP list to begin the season, thus making him ineligible for the first six games.

After a week six win against the Dallas Cowboys, Rice was permitted to return to the practice field. The team now has until November 7 to make a final decision on the wide receiver. NFL rules allow players coming off the PUP list to practice with the team for three weeks before the team must decide to activate the player, place him on injured reserve, or release him.

Halfway through the three-week grace period, Rice seems to be increasing his workload by running routes after practice. Although Rice is yet to work at full speed, he is putting in extra time catching passes from wide receivers’ coach George Stewart.

With the acquisition of Randy Moss and the emergence of Percy Harvin, the Vikings have no reason to rush Sidney Rice back to the playing field. But Brett Favre and company have to be excited about the the possibility of lining up those three receivers on the same field.
