Roster Decisions: Tauscher, Havner, & Harris

November 13, 2010

On Friday, the Green Bay Packers placed their 11th player on injured-reserve. Veteran right tackle Mark Tauscher became the 6th Packers’ starter to join the IR list this season. Tauscher injured his shoulder during a victory over the Detroit Lions back in week 4, but on Friday, Packers general manager Ted Thompson characterized the the injury as “too severe to overcome” officially ending Tauscher’s season. Scheduled to make $4.1 million next season, many have begun to wonder if the former 7th-round draft choice’s career in Green Bay has come to its conclusion.

To fill Tauscher’s roster spot, the team re-signed tight end Spencer Havner. Havner spent his first two-seasons in Green Bay, but found himself as the odd man out when the Packers trimmed their roster to 53 players prior to the 2010 season. The Packers chose 4 other tight ends over Havner before the season, but injuries to Jermichael Finley, Andrew Quarless, and Donald Lee have forced the Packers to bring back Havner.

Knowing that Tauscher’s injury was possibly season ending, it remains curious that Ted Thompson chose to release cornerback Al Harris earlier this week. I still wonder if there is more to Harris’ story then we know. Either Harris was not fully recovered from his knee injury or he was not going to accept being the 4th cornerback on this team. Eventually we will find out the rest of the story on Al Harris, but for now, Aaron Rodgers has another security blanket in Spencer “all I do is catch touchdown passes” Havner.

I don’t have anything against Havner, he’s a talented player, but I would have thought the Packers would want to find an offensive lineman instead. Since Bulaga is now officially the starting RT, the depth on the line is very weak. Hopefully it won’t hurt us in the second half of the season.

That was my first thought, too. What happens if Clifton goes down? Musical chairs again?

And that’s exactly how we got 50 sacks last year. We’ll just have to pray the o line stays healthy in the second half of the year. That could be a factor in the run for the playoffs this year.

True that. I suppose it’s amazing that we’re even talking about playoffs with 11 players on injured reserve.
