Vikings To Play At TCF Bank Stadium Monday Night

December 14, 2010

It’s official. With the Metrodome currently out of commission, the Vikings will face the Chicago Bears under the lights of TCF Bank Stadium on Monday night. The Vikings released the following statement on Tuesday:

We are committed to playing Monday night’s game in Minnesota in front of our fans. With Mall of America Field at the Metrodome now unavailable, we have turned our full attention to the University of Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium. We have been in close contact with the University and the NFL office since last weekend. Preparation of the stadium is fully underway and University officials have told us they will make every reasonable effort to ensure the stadium will be ready for Monday night. The league office is assisting our staff and the University to ensure the stadium is safe for our fans and meets the primary technical requirements for an NFL game. We appreciate the tremendous cooperation of the University of Minnesota and look forward to completing preparations for the game and turning this into a memorable experience for the State of Minnesota and Vikings fans.

More information will follow for those who hold tickets to the Vikings-Bears game.

What the Vikings coined “primary technical requirements for an NFL game” include a range of issues. For instance, the Metrodome holds slightly over 64,000 purple-clad fans and TCF Bank Stadium holds about 50,000. In other words, a significant number of ticket holders may find themselves out of luck. The consumption of alcohol further complicates things (how many situations does the previous sentence apply?) As a college football stadium, TCF does not allow alcohol. The final hurdle involves the same problem that plagued the Metrodome – Mother Nature. In it’s current state, TCF is winterized; the water has been turned off and it’s buried in about 17 inches of snow. And to further complicate things, the Minneapolis area is expecting 2-4 more inches of fresh snow on Wednesday.

A number of obstacles remain, but it sounds as if the Vikings will play their first outdoor game at home since hosting the Kansas City Chiefs on December 20, 1981 at Metropolitan Stadium.
