Vikings Add Veteran QB Patrick Ramsey; Joe Webb Likely To Start

December 16, 2010

Jeremy Fowler of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that the Vikings have agreed to terms with journeyman quarterback Patrick Ramsey. Ramsey was originally a first-round draft pick of the Washington Redskins in 2002, but has played for seven different teams in his nine year NFL tenure.

Ramsey was signed to provide insurance for a battered and banged up batch of Vikings’ quarterbacks. Starter Brett Favre failed to notch his 322nd consecutive start last Monday against the Giants with a sprained SC joint in his shoulder and is still experiencing numbness in his throwing hand. Interim head coach Leslie Frazier is “holding out hope that things will improve for Brett” and given Favre’s history, a miraculous recovery would not be all that surprising.

Next in line was Tarvaris Jackson who turned in a miserable performance in Monday’s loss to the Giants. To add injury to insult — literally — Jackson suffered a toe injury that will keep him out of this Sunday’s game.

Enter Joe Webb. The dynamic rookie may see his first NFL start on Sunday, but he is also nursing an injury. The Vikings know they have a talented, albeit raw, player in Webb, and the Vikings’ fan base has been champing at the bit to see Webb in action this season. Leslie Frazier may be forced to grant their wish on Sunday.

Frazier has not determined who will start at quarterback on Sunday, but acknowledged that Joe Webb, if healthy, would likely be the starter.

“Hopefully he’s healthy,” Frazier said. “He’s still not that far removed from the hamstring, and that can be a tricky injury. If he doesn’t start, it would probably be because of injury. We want to be able to put a guy in there who is familiar with how we do things. To put someone in there who’s only been with us a few days to start would be real, real hard. Now it may come to that. Hopefully it doesn’t. We would rather for Joe to be the starter.”
