Josh McDaniels, Mike Singletary To Interview With Vikings

January 7, 2011

Vikings’ head coach Leslie Frazier was the Denver Broncos’ second choice for head coach in 2009. Two years later, Frazier may end up hiring the man who was chosen ahead of him.

Judd Zulgad and Chip Scoggins of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune report that former Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels will interview with the Vikings on Friday. McDaniels will presumably interview for the offensive coordinator position currently held by Darrell Bevell.

The Vikings’ staff will also interview a defensive coach. Former San Francisco 49ers coach, and good friend of Leslie Frazier, Mike Singletary will interview with the team. When Singletary’s interview will take place is unclear, but given the close relationship between Frazier and Singletary it’s not certain that a formal interview would even be necessary.

“Mike is a great friend of mine and he’s sorting through some things right now and just trying to figure out what he wants to do,” Frazier told Minneapolis radio station KFAN, “but he and I are often in conversation, we always have been. So we’ll talk about a bunch of different things over the weeks to come.”

Singletary would likely fill the void at linebackers coach that was vacated by Fred Pagac who was promoted to interim defensive coordinator. Josh McDaniels would presumably bump current offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell out of his position. Whether or not Bevell would remain on the coaching staff is uncertain.

If the Vikings and McDaniels are able to reach an agreement, it may signal the end of the Brad Childress/Darrell Bevell version of the West Coast offense. McDaniels was an assistant under New England’s Bill Belichick, where he helped develop quarterback Matt Cassel. Vikings’ quarterback Brett Favre will not be returning for another season, so the offensive system employed by the Vikings should look completely different next year. And that difference will begin at the most important position on the field: Quarterback. Whether the Vikings’ signal caller is Joe Webb or a player selected in this year’s draft remains a mystery.
