Packers Legend: Jack Vainisi
Most modern-day Packers’ fans do not know the name Jack Vainisi. He made his mark on the team in the 1950s, but his impact has made the dynasty what it is today. Fortunately, a friend of mine, and a family friend of the Vainisis, passed along an article about him from the Green Bay Press-Gazette. As it turns out, without Vainisi the Packers would never have hired legendary coach Vince Lombardi. And without Lombardi, the Packers simply wouldn’t be…well, they wouldn’t be the Green Bay Packers.
Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette penned a thoroughly-researched and well written article about Vainisi back in November.
He was a pioneer in NFL scouting who essentially started the Packers’ college scouting department in 1950. He also was a major force behind bringing Lombardi to Green Bay and recommended the drafting or signing of eight college players who went on to Pro Football Hall of Fame careers under Lombardi.
I would recommend following the link and reading the entire article, and if you’re looking for a more in-depth story behind Jack Vainisi, Vince Lombardi, and the Green Bay Packers look no further than David Maraniss’ biography, When Pride Still Mattered: A Life Of Vince Lombardi.
