Sporting News Names Packers’ Clay Matthews Defensive Player Of The Year
It’s that time of year again. In the midst of NFL clubs competing for the ultimate team prize, the individual accolades are handed out.
The Sporting News kicked off the awards season by naming Packers’ outside linebacker Clay Matthews its Defensive Player of the Year.
Labeling him “the NFL’s Tasmanian Devil“, the Sporting News recognized Matthews for his spectacular season. The second year player out of USC finished the regular season with 13 1/2 sacks, 60 tackles, 1 interception, and 2 forced fumbles.
As is usually the case, Matthews’ statistics only tell half of the story. His presence on the field forced offensive coordinators to account for him and scheme against him on every single play. His play led a Packers defense that Football Outsiders ranked 2nd in the league.
The Sporting News awards are determined by the votes of 609 NFL players, coaches, and executives.
