McCarthy: Hawk And Bishop Will Start Next Season

March 11, 2011

Whenever the next NFL season begins, the Packers will roll out two familiar faces at the inside linebacker position of Dom Capers’ defense. Packers’ head coach Mike McCarthy told Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the duo of A.J. Hawk and Desmond Bishop will have the opportunity to pick up exactly where they left off last season.

“We line up tomorrow, it’s A.J. and Bishop, and that’s the way we finished,” said McCarthy.

Armed with new contracts keeping both players in green and gold until at least 2014, Hawk and Bishop  should be leading the Packers’ defense for years to come.

With the unofficial proclamation from McCarthy, former starter Nick Barnett’s status for next season remains unclear. Reports surfaced last week that the Packers were attempting to trade the ninth-year linebacker, but nothing materialized from the rumors. Barnett is scheduled to make $6.9 million dollars next season, which would appear to be a steep price for a backup.

McCarthy cited a wait-and-see approach with Nick Barnett as well as backup Brandon Chillar, who are both coming off season-ending injuries.

“We have to see how he comes off the wrist,” McCarthy said of Barnett. “Same thing with Chillar. That’s his third shoulder surgery. You know how these things go. I’m glad we aren’t playing this week. The season we had, I spent too much time with the doctors.”

With the owners and players lacking common ground in the collective bargaining agreement, McCarthy may have a while before he has to make any decisions. For the time being, McCarthy should enjoy his doctor-less offseason.

After the masterful performance he conducted last season, he certainly deserves it.
