Ryan Grant Is Going To Prom For A Good Cause

March 16, 2011

Green Bay Packers running back Ryan Grant first met 11-year old Packers fan Ryan Luxem in November of 2010. Grant received an e-mail message about Luxem who was in the advanced stages of leukemia. Instead of sending an autograph, Grant got into his car, drove to Milwaukee, and surprised Luxem.

The visit brightened the spirits of a young boy who had gone through far too much pain for his short life, and Grant left wondering what else he could do. After Grant found out that Ryan Luxem had succumbed to the disease in December, he wanted to make sure Luxem was never forgotten.

On Tuesday, Grant made good on his promise. He announced that he would be making a scholarship fund in honor of Luxem. In order to raise money, he is funding, and attending, the junior prom at Burlington Catholic Central High School where Luxem’s mother is a teacher.

Grant and several teammates are also raising funds for the scholarship with a “Ryan 4 Ryan Celebration.” According to Lori Nickel of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the event in Greenfield, Wisconsin will “be open to the public, and the entrance fees from the day will be donated to the Luxem scholarship.”

In the grand scheme of life, it’s a small gesture, but for Grant it allows the memory of a special fan to live on. When speaking of Ryan Luxem, Grant said, “he touched me, he brought something to me.” And now, Grant has passed that feeling on. Ryan Luxem’s scholarship will bring something to others for years to come.
