Vikings’ Christian Ponder Organizing Workouts

May 18, 2011

The Vikings drafted quarterback Christian Ponder to be the team’s leader on and off the field. And the first-round selection is already showcasing those leadership skills by setting up workouts with new teammates Percy Harvin and Sidney Rice in Florida this week.

According to Jeremy Fowler of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Ponder is the only player out of the aforementioned trio to have a copy of the new playbook from offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave. While Ponder’s workouts will certainly be filled with throwing and catching, they will most likely include a trip to Kinko’s to photocopy the playbook as well.

If Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier truly wants Ponder to start on week 1 of the regular season, these workout sessions will be vital to Ponder’s development. As Mike Wobschall of points out, these players “have never been on the field together” and a new quarterback needs time to develop and get to know his receivers.

What Ponder truly needs is a full offseason with proper coaching, but given the current state of the NFL, that’s not going to happen. By organizing individual workouts, Ponder is taking advantage of the next best option.
