White House On Three?

July 25, 2011

To the victors go the spoils. And if you’re a Super Bowl champion, the spoils typically include a meet-and-greet with the President. This is no typical year in the NFL, however, and Packers President Mark Murphy said the team is uncertain when a White House visit will occur.

“We’ve since had some discussions, looking at whether we can find a date in August where the team could go down and visit the White House,” Murphy told reporters in Green Bay on Monday. “I hope we can make it. I think it’d be such a special and unique opportunity for our players.”

Murphy acknowledged that President Obama “may have more important things to deal with” right now, but I cannot imagine that both the Packers and the President cannot carve out a few hours to honor the tradition.

Granted, the Packers have a lot of work to do before the team travels to Cleveland in 19 days for their first preseason game, but after Charles Woodson’s “White House speech” (I still get goosebumps watching it), how could you possibly deny the players a trip to Washington D.C.?

Additionally, at a time when the talking heads in our nation’s capitol are unable to agree on anything, maybe a visit from a group that embodies teamwork and perseverance could teach our elected officials a thing or two.
